What is M2 High Speed Steel?
M2 steel is a general purpose molybdenum-type high-speed steel exhibiting well-balanced toughness, wear-resistance and red hardness properties. This grade is commonly used in cold work punches and dies and cutting applications involving high-speed and light cuts. M2 high-speed steel is by far the most popular high-speed steel replacing T1 in most applications because of its superior properties such as its bending strength, toughness and thermo-plasticity—all of which are higher than T1 by 50%.
M2 is characterised by well-balanced toughness, wear resistance and red hardness properties. AISI M2 high-speed steel has largely replaced T1 in most applications due to its superior properties and advantageous pricing. M2 is medium-alloyed and is a good all-round performer with good machinability, in this respect it is superior to the high alloyed cold work steels.
HSS grade steel M2 is a medium alloyed high speed steel which has good machinability. The H-SS M2 chemical composition gives a good combination of well-balanced toughness, wear resistance and red hardness properties. Widely used for cutting tools such as twist drills, taps, milling cutters, saws, knives etc. Also commonly used in cold work punches and dies and cutting applications involving high speed and light cuts. Grade M2 High Speed Steel is by far the most popular high speed steel replacing high speed steel grade T1 in most applications because of its superior properties and relative economy.
It is a popular grade for cutting and non-cutting applications. Compared to M1 Tool Steel, M2 grade has a high carbon content which provides higher wear resistance for applications that need it. M2 High Speed Steel has a wider heat-treating range than most of the molybdenum high-speed steels. In addition, M2 steel has a resistance to decarburization that is characteristic of tungsten types and M2 offers an excellent combination of red hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.
M2 is available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. As with all Alro Specialty Metal products, M2 is subjected to a variety of rigid quality control tests and inspection to ensure quality, uniformity, and reliability.
In the annealed state, M2 grade steel is considered to be a medium tool steel. The term high-speed steel comes from the ability of M2 to withstand higher temperatures without losing hardness. Therefore, it can stand up to the heat built up when higher machining speeds are used.
M2 is the “standard” and most widely used industrial HSS. It has small and evenly distributed carbides giving high wear resistance, though its decarburization sensitivity is a little bit high. After heat treatment, its hardness is the same as T1, but its bending strength can reach 4700 MPa, and its toughness and thermo-plasticity are higher than T1 by 50%. It is usually used to manufacture a variety of tools, such as drill bits, taps and reamers. 1.3343 is the equivalent numeric designation for M2 material identified in ISO 4957.
M2 is an AOD melted high speed tool steel with increased properties due to molybdenum additions. M2 is a higher carbon version of M1 giving it better wear resistance. M2 is used mostly in cutting tool applications. Universal Stainless rolls this product on a 4HI reversing blooming mill into plate.
