M41 high speed steel American standard steel molybdenum high speed tool steel. The main features are fine carbide particles, uniform distribution, good toughness, but decarburization sensitivity and overheating sensitivity, thermal processing and heat treatment range narrow.

Features

This alloy is a High Speed, tungsten, molybdenum containing tool steel. It has good toughness along with hardness and is lower in cost than an equivalent tungsten (W) tool steel.

Applications

Primary application is as cutting tools for machining operations.

Equvialent

Machinability

Machinability of M41 is rated at 55% that of the W group water hardening low alloy tool steels which are at 100% as a machinability reference.

Forming

Forming of the alloy may be done in the annealed condition be conventional methods.

Heat Treatment

Preheat at 1450 F and then rapidly heat to 2250 F. Hold parts for 2 to 5 minutes and air cool, salt bath or oil quench.

Annealing:

Anneal at 1600 – 1650 F and slow cool in the furnace at less than 40 F per hour.

Tempering:

Temper at 1000 to 1100 F for at least one hour at temperature. Repeating the tempering operation twice more, for a triple temper, is recommended. Rockwell C hardness will be in the range of 70 to 65.

Forging

Forge at 2100 F down to 1750 F. Do not forge below 1700 F.

Cold Working

Cold working of M41 in the annealed condition may be done by conventional methods.
