What is Rubber Mould?
A rubber mould is a specialized tooling designed for shaping and vulcanizing rubber compounds into finished products. These moulds operate under specific conditions of heat and pressure required for the vulcanization process, which transforms raw rubber compounds into durable elastic products. The mould design must account for the unique characteristics of rubber processing, including material flow behavior, shrinkage rates, and the chemical changes that occur during vulcanization, while incorporating features for proper venting and material distribution.
The primary function of rubber moulds is to shape and cure rubber materials into various products such as seals, gaskets, automotive parts, industrial components, and consumer goods. These moulds must maintain precise temperature control throughout the curing cycle to ensure proper vulcanization and optimal product properties. They incorporate sophisticated heating systems, pressure control mechanisms, and special surface features to facilitate material flow and prevent premature curing. The design typically includes transfer ports, runner systems, flash grooves, and air vents to ensure complete filling and proper degassing during the molding process.
Rubber moulds require materials with specific characteristics to handle the demanding conditions of rubber processing. The mould materials must possess excellent heat resistance to withstand vulcanization temperatures, superior wear resistance to handle abrasive compounds, and good thermal conductivity for uniform heating and cooling. These moulds often feature special surface treatments or coatings to prevent rubber adhesion and improve release properties, as rubber compounds can be particularly challenging to separate from mould surfaces after vulcanization. The materials must also resist the effects of chemical agents present in rubber compounds and maintain dimensional stability under repeated thermal cycling and high pressure conditions.
