What is Cold Heading Mould?
Cold heading moulds are precision-engineered tooling systems used for forming metal parts through compression at room temperature, particularly specialized in forming heads or enlarged sections on wire, rod, or bar stock. These moulds consist of multiple components including punches, dies matrices, and ejectors, all working together in precise synchronization to achieve complex geometrical changes while maintaining strict dimensional control. The process relies on the material’s ability to flow under high pressure without heating.
Cold heading moulds are primarily used in the mass production of fasteners, pins, rivets, and specialized components that require enlarged sections or complex head geometries. This process is highly efficient, producing parts at high speeds while achieving excellent material utilization and superior mechanical properties. The components produced through cold heading typically exhibit better strength characteristics due to work hardening, improved grain flow, and enhanced surface finish compared to machined parts.
The mould materials employed in cold heading applications contain specific alloying elements crucial for performance under extreme conditions. Premium grade tool steels such as M4, T15, or special carbide grades are commonly used, containing high percentages of tungsten (6-12%), cobalt (5-12%), and vanadium (4-5%). These materials achieve exceptional hardness levels (63-65 HRC) while maintaining the necessary toughness to resist impact loads. The high alloy content and carefully controlled heat treatment processes result in a microstructure featuring fine, uniformly distributed carbides that provide outstanding wear resistance and dimensional stability under the severe stress conditions typical in cold heading operations.
